Mark Bradford, Lights and Tunnels (2015)

p.s. A note of attribution: Our header image and the one above are mixed media paintings Mark Bradford. Using discarded city materials like movie posters and ropes, Bradford creates large-scale mixed media works that reference geographical and emotional mapping, as well as issues of identity, informed by his own location as a queer Black artist who came up in the developing AIDS crisis. A blurb from  a recent exhibition at LA's Hammer Museum reads, "With these works, [Bradford] explodes the deep cultural fears and misrepresentations that misconceive of black identity and gender as one-dimensional, providing a trenchant critique of pervasive cultural racism and homophobia in society as a whole."
